Who lives around this address?
We built a tool that, given an address in Italy and a radius, works out how many people live there and who they are. We use it for area reports before a shop or restaurant opens.

The question
Before signing a lease the question is simple: how many people live around here, and are they the right customers? It is usually answered by eye, or with data for the whole municipality, which is too coarse to understand a neighbourhood.
How it works
It starts from the address: the tool downloads the region's ISTAT data and the part of the GHSL grid it needs, cuts the census sections with the radius and adds up the data. The ISTAT total is compared with the GHSL estimate, which is independent: if the two numbers drift apart, it shows straight away.
What's in the report
Residents and density, age and sex, education, employment, citizenship, households and housing, plus the shops around taken from OpenStreetMap. One address can have several radii in the same report.
Where it has been used
So far for areas of Tuscany, with radii from 300 metres to 15 km. The tool works for any address in Italy.
